Cookies

The small print, made small.

Every cookie this site may set, what it is for and how long it lasts. Durations for cookies set by Google and Meta are typical values chosen by those companies.

What cookies are

Cookies are small text files a site stores in your browser so it can remember something between pages or visits. Some are set by us ("first-party"), others by services we use, such as Google or Meta ("third-party"). For how we handle the information itself, see the privacy policy.

Essential

These are needed for the site to work and cannot be switched off.

Google Analytics is loaded through Google Tag Manager together with our advertising tags, so it only runs when advertising cookies are allowed, and within that it follows your analytics choice. We also use Vercel Web Analytics for simple page counts; it does not use cookies or identify you.

All of these except ps_attr are loaded through Google Tag Manager. When advertising cookies are off, Google Tag Manager and the Meta Pixel are not loaded at all, the remaining Google Ads tag runs in a restricted mode without ad cookies, and we do not store which ad brought you here.

Embedded content

Podcast episodes and videos are embedded from YouTube. When you play one, YouTube may set its own cookies under Google's policies. Links to Substack, Amazon and other sites lead to those sites' own cookie policies.

Changing your mind

You can change your choice whenever you like. It takes effect right away, and we keep your choice for a year before asking again. You can also clear cookies in your browser settings, or turn on your browser's Global Privacy Control, which we treat as an opt-out of advertising cookies.
